Join us for Memorial Day Weekend in "Bean Town"--Boston, that is!! We ride to Boston on Amtrak's "Acela Express" at the highest speed you can reach on U. S. rails. Using our "Charlie Cards" we will ride the "T" (Boston Transit) from South Station to our hotel for THREE nights, the "Holiday Inn-Boston-Brookline", phone 1-800-315-2621. A generous buffet breakfast is included each morning of our stay.
Saturday we ride MBTA trains to Lowell, MA and the National Historic Park there. The park offers an in-depth look at the 19th century textile industry. We explore it by trolley, canal boat (on 5.6 miles of canals) and see operating power looms in the Boott Cotton Mill Museum. Lunch and dinner are on your own today.
Sunday is reserved to ride the newly re-opened Greenbush rail line on Old Colony RR trackage. With our trusty "Charlie Cards" we will also ride several "T" lines including the restored Ashmont-Mattapan line with its restored PCC cars.
Sunday night is set aside for the traditional trip banquet at the famous Durgin Park Restaurant, in the Fanieul Hall Market Place. A soup (or salad) to dessert repast with a choice of FIVE entrees and beverages is included. Alcoholic drinks are on your own.
Monday we add "icing to the cake" with a narrated cruise around Boston Harbor. Historic sites, lighthouses and islands will be seen and explained to us. The Boston skyline will form a backdrop for us. Too soon it will be time to board an Amtrak Regional Train and return to Penn Station, arriving in early evening.
