For many, many years it was not possible to explore this little-known line on a one day roundtrip; now N. J. Transit has installed passing sidings and offers service in both directions making this trip possible. The line was built as the NEW JERSEY & NEW YORK RR and was for many years an ERIE BRANCH. It ran from Jersey City via Hackensack to Spring Valley, NY out of Erie's Jersey City terminal and now runs from Hoboken's Lackawanna Terminal. After leaving Secaucus Jct. Station, where NYC-Penn Sta. passengers transfer to the Pascack Valley train, we turn north off the ex-ERIE MAINLINE at NJ-NY JCT. At Nanuet, NY, the line joins the ex-ERIE PIERMONT BRANCH (BUILT 1840) (actually the original Erie main line) for a short distance to the end of the line at Spring Valley, NY. We reboard here and return to Westwood, NJ for lunch (note the beautiful station). Our lunch is at the "IRON HORSE RESTAURANT & CAFE" with an appropriate railroad motif decor. While you need NOT choose UNTIL THE DAY OF THE TRIP, meal choices include: Beef or Cheeseburger, Corned Beef Reuben, Pulled Pork Sandwich, Asian Grilled Chicken Sandwich, Fish & Chips or Grilled Chicken. A crock of Iron Horse Cole Slaw and pickles as well as Coffee, Tea and fountain soft drinks plus Dessert included. Alcoholic drinks are on your own. After lunch we board the train to NYC-Penn (Change at Secaucus Jct.) or to Hoboken. |
